Abstract/Summary

This chapter revisits the corporate governance convergence debate, arguing that governance models in the Western world have evolved through alternating periods of convergence, contestation, and divergence. This chapter charts these developments and argues that the core issue transcends economics, politics, or law—it is fundamentally ethical. We explore the ethical foundations of competing governance models and consider whether a convergence of ethical frameworks around a hybrid model is both possible and desirable, and what this may mean for board directors.
