Abstract/Summary

Lead tokens are an understudied element of Romano-Egyptian material culture: few have been published and fewer can be associated with detailed contexts. This article presents a large and important new assemblage of lead tokens from the temple of Isis on Antirhodos Island, Alexandria. This assemblage represents the largest provenanced collection of tokens from Roman Egypt, adding to the study of this historically under-examined object type. Putting the tokens in context allows us to explore their possible role within the sanctuary and the function of tokens in Roman Egypt. We conclude that these lead tokens relate to the sanctuary, either as votives or banqueting tokens.
