Abstract/Summary

Item Type:Show/Exhibition
Divisions:Arts, Humanities and Social Science > School of Arts and Communication Design > Art > Fine Art
ID Code:18481
Additional Information:The exhibition explores the changing ways in which artists have represented their studios: as sociable or theatrical spaces; private rooms for reflection; or sites for bohemian or alternative lifestyles. From the garrets of struggling artists to rooms packed with wealthy patrons, the studio is shown as not only a creative space but as a rich source of information about the nature and work of the artist. In the exhibition you will find paintings by artists such as Paul Cézanne, Paula Rego and J M W Turner as well as drawings, books and manuscripts. A selection of photographs of artists’ studios will be on display, including those of Francis Bacon, Anthony Gormley and Frank Auerbach. The show also features a fascinating selection of studio furniture, including an easel from the studio of Joshua Reynolds and painting equipment belonging to J M W Turner. The exhibition is accompanied by a fully illustrated book available from the Sainsbury Centre Gallery Shop. Exhibition organised by Compton Verney and curated by Giles Waterfield, independent curator and writer, and Antonia Harrison, curator, Compton Verney.
