Abstract/Summary

This richly illustrated edited volume comprises 25 chapters by leading archaeologists, architectural historians, and ancient historians. It explores the Roman villa phenomenon from various angles: architecture and decor; production and economy; social functions; and reception of the idea of the 'villa' in modern times. It offers the first comprehensive survey of Roman villas in Italy and the Mediterranean provinces, placing regional sites in large historical perspective and investigating how the distinctive Roman/Italian villa type was transferred to the provinces, resulting in Mediterranean-wide culture of rural dwelling.
