Abstract/SummaryThis volume describes the 2008-2010 excavations at WF16, a Pre-Pottery neolithic A site in Southern Jordan dating to c. 12,000-10,300 BP. The site was discovered in 1996 and evaluated between 1997-2003 (Finalyson & Mithen 2007). The excavation exposed c. 30 semi-subterranean structures of various sizes and designs, along with burials, middens, animal and plant remains and a rich array of material culture. The stratigraphy and contents are fully described, along with an analysis of radiocarbon dates and chipped stone artefacts to establish the site chronology, and a description of the architecture and burials. The volume includes a review of the early Neolithic in the Levant to place the excavation into context and a concluding chapter that interprets the evidence prior to the major post-excavation phase of the WF16 project.
