Abstract/Summary

Written to provide an authoritative overview of peace operations, this book explores the law and practice of operations conducted by the UN, regional organisations, and states. The text is an accessible guide to peace operations and their place in international law informed by cutting-edge research. While providing an indispensable handbook for researchers and students in the field, Gilder updates our understanding of peace operations arguing the international community has transitioned to new forms of intervention that necessitate a revisiting of the regime that governs peace operations as part of international law. In each section, Gilder builds on recent trends in peace operation practice to look to the future of international intervention and provide a critical appraisal of the international community's efforts to provide peace and security. Authored by one of the few international lawyers working in the peace operation space, the book provides a truly interdisciplinary account of how peace operations are mandated, the law applicable to their operations, the distinction between peacekeeping and peace enforcement, and contemporary issues in practice, such as protection of civilian mandates, stabilization, local engagement by international forces, and the involvement of regional organisations. This broad coverage, alongside research-led insights, makes the book an important resource for researchers, policymakers, and students working on these topics.
