Abstract/SummaryStarting from the familiar, basic proposition that we interpret trusts according to ‘the intention of the settlor’, this article notes that the truth can be more complex. The height of this complexity appears to arise in fundraising appeal collection trusts. There the usual declaratory role of the settlor may in truth be fragmented between four different groups of people – the appeal initiators, their trustees, the legal advisors of either, and finally the donors – so that the intentions of any of these may need to be consulted on different issues of interpretation of the trust.
