Abstract/Summary
At its 2022 Madrid Summit, NATO adopted the Human Security Approach and Guiding Principles, marking a significant shift toward a human-centred perspective across all its core tasks: deterrence and defence, crisis prevention and management, and cooperative security. This chapter outlines the origins of NATO’s Human Security Approach, traces the evidence base for NATO’s Guiding Principles on Human Security, and assesses the challenges and prospects for the implementation of human security in the NATO context.
