Abstract/Summary

This scholarly edition of the manuscript of the Diary from 1617-1622 of the eminent 16th-century English actor Edward Alleyn records his daily expenditures and his notations of significant events as a theatre owner, entrepreneur, London property developer, philanthropist and founder of Dulwich College, Dulwich Chapel and Dulwich Almshouses. The Diary especially records his personal interactions with high-ranking officials (such as Sir Francis Bacon and George Villiers, 1st Duke of Buckingham), religious leaders, ambassadors, poets (including John Donne), actors and other prominent figures. This edition presents a fresh transcription of the Diary (available as manuscript images at http://www.henslowe-alleyn.org.uk/) and also includes a scholarly Introduction, a physical description of the manuscript, and glossaries of people, objects and locations mentioned throughout the text. This edition will present facing page transcriptions of each digital manuscript page.
