Abstract/SummaryThis study presents the performance of an android smartphone application; RoadLab Pro, a free application whose development was sponsored by the World Bank. In the study, data was collected from some federal roads linking neighbouring State Capitals (Kaduna, Minna, Lokoja, Jos) to the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) – Abuja. An android smartphone mounted on a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) windshield, running the RoadLab Pro software was used to collect round trip road condition data for each State Capital. The results indicated that Abuja – Lokoja had the best road (Average IRI = 3.3) thus, classified as good, followed by Abuja – Minna (4.5), Abuja – Jos (4.63), Abuja – Kaduna (4.76), all rated fair. The RoadLab Pro being free shows sufficient utility and allows for control over road condition data collected but requires other Geographic Information System (GIS) applications to visualise road condition data on a computer. Therefore, RoadLab Pro as a road condition monitoring application would significantly benefit road transport departments with skill deficits, manpower shortages and limited budgets for road condition monitoring.
