Abstract/Summary

A study of the two terms in the book's title with chapters on Shakespeare's Lucrece, Pope's The Rape of the Lock, Richardson's Clarissa, Shelley's The Cenci, Hardy's poetry, Tess and The Well-Beloved, Larkin's 'Deceptions' and Nabokov's Lolita. There is an introduction, and a final chapter on the composition of my 'There Again', plus an appendix of seven poems and an interview.
