Sloan, G. (2026) Democratic Ideals and Reality: Mackinder's geopolitics in the twenty first century. International Politics. ISSN 1740-3898 (In Press)
Abstract/Summary
The aim of this article is to examine Sir Halford Mackinder's book Democratic Ideals and Reality which was published in 1919. The argument is that this second version of his 'Heartland Theory 'contains a synthesis of geography ,history and strategy and provides an understanding of how changes in transport and weapons technology can affect the political and strategic importance of certain locations in the twenty first century. It uses both particularizing and generalizing forms of enquiry. This works taxonomically, populating categories and facilitating reasoned comparisons within and across regions.
