A concise account of Isotype, visual aids, and the colonies, including discussion of Otto Neurath's arguments in favour of visual aids and their contribution to visual education in colonial territories; the activities of Wolfgang Foges, Adprint, and Buffalo Books; and the work of Marie Neurath and the Isotype Institute in the Western Region of Nigeria in the 1950s.

Publisher Statement:Piktogramme kennt jeder. Sprachunabhängig vermitteln sie Informationen. Otto Neuraths ISOTYPE ist ein Vorläufer heutiger Piktogramme. Mit farbenfrohen, eingängigen Bildern wollte Neurath wirtschaftliche und soziale Daten allen zugänglich machen. Bis heute faszinieren Ästhetik und emanzipatorischer Anspruch dieser Bildsprache. Das neue Standardwerk zum Thema! 1925 entwickelte Otto Neurath (1882-1945) mit seinem Team eine allgemein verständliche Bildsprache. Der Künstler Gerd Arntz verhalf ihr mit seinen Piktogrammen zu Popularität. Im Roten Wien (1918-1934) traf die Idee auf fruchtbaren Boden. Von dort verbreitete sich die Wiener Methode international. Sie bot den Menschen Wissen und eine Orientierung in der Welt – mit Bildern und wenig Worten. Ein umfassender Überblick: Wiederentdeckung, Schlüsselprojekte, internationale Entwicklung, „Isotype heute" u.v.m.
